    Strength training is a form of exercise where muscles produce force against resistance in order to increase strength, muscle mass, and physical capacity.

    The resistance can come from external loads such as barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, or machines, or from bodyweight during movements like push-ups, pull-ups, and squats. The defining characteristic of strength training is the use of progressively increasing resistance over time.

    When muscles repeatedly generate force against resistance, the body adapts by improving its ability to produce force. These adaptations include increases in muscle size, improvements in neuromuscular coordination, and structural changes in connective tissue and bone.

    Is Pilates Strength Training?

    Pilates is often promoted as a way to build strength, but whether it qualifies as strength training depends on how strength is defined.

    However, when most people refer to strength training, they are typically describing exercise that allows progressively heavier loading of the muscles, such as lifting weights.

    Research examining Pilates and strength outcomes generally shows modest improvements when Pilates is compared to no exercise. In studies comparing Pilates directly with resistance training, traditional strength training consistently produces larger improvements in strength and physical performance.

    This difference likely reflects the amount of mechanical loading involved. Strength and muscle mass tend to increase most when muscles are trained with sufficient resistance and progressive overload.

    Pilates may still provide benefits compared with inactivity, particularly for trunk strength and general movement. However, if the goal is maximizing strength or muscle mass, traditional resistance training is generally more effective.

    Is Yoga Strength Training?

    Yoga can produce small improvements in strength, particularly in individuals who are new to exercise.

    Many yoga poses involve supporting bodyweight in positions that require muscular effort. This can produce modest strength adaptations when compared with inactivity.

    However, yoga typically involves relatively low levels of external resistance and limited opportunities for progressive overload. Because of this, it generally produces smaller strength and muscle gains compared with structured resistance training.

    Is Calisthenics Strength Training?

    Calisthenics refers to bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, dips, and squats.

    When these exercises are progressively made more challenging—by increasing repetitions, modifying leverage, or adding external resistance—they can function as effective strength training.

    Bodyweight training can improve strength and muscle mass, particularly in beginners. However, compared with traditional resistance training using weights, calisthenics may offer fewer options for precise loading and progressive overload.

    How Often Should You Do Strength Training?

    Most people benefit from performing strength training two to four times per week.

    Beginners often make excellent progress with two or three sessions per week. More experienced lifters may train more frequently depending on their goals and recovery capacity.

    Consistency over time is far more important than any specific weekly schedule.
